What is prescribed fire? Prescribed fire is a planned fire. It is a versatile tool that can be used to reduce flammable vegetation, both living and dead that can significantly increase the intensity, speed, and duration of wildfires. It is a way to enhance ecosystem health by promoting biodiversity, reducing fuel buildup, releasing nutrients, and triggering changes in vegetation communities. It can also mimic the natural frequency, intensity, severity, and timing of fires in a particular area. We can help restore natural habitats and manage invasive species that are important for certain ecosystems.
Is prescribed fire safe? How do we make prescribed fire safe? Yes, prescribed fire is generally safe. We make a careful plan for the prescribed fire before there is ever fire on the ground. Our plan consists of specific objectives, burning with favorable weather conditions, in-place containment lines / unit boundary, contingency plans, and other safety measures following all fire laws.

Hazard Fuel Reduction
What is Hazard Fuel Reduction? Hazard fuel reduction is a way to make an area safer by lowering the chance of a fire spreading quickly. It involves removing and managing combustible plants that contribute to wildland fires. These fuels include fallen trees, dead branches, standing dead trees, dead and decaying shrubs, leaf litter, and grasses. We reduce hazardous fuels by using techniques such as prescribed burning and mechanical thinning.
Wildfire Mitigation
We offer Firewise Consulting to help reduce the risk of wildfire damage in your community. We work with local, state, and federal agencies to help develop or grow a program in your area. We can also assist in applying for a Firewise USA grant through the Virginia Department of Forestry.
